“Fights people coming off losses” – Justin Gaethje brutally roasts UFC superstar, says he is returning in 2023
Justin Gaethje celebrates win
Justin Gaethje has not fought in the UFC since he lost to former champion Charles Oliveira. Despite being out of action for a while, Gaethje is still the #3 ranked lightweight in the UFC. And his fights are always entertaining regardless of the outcome.
Gaethje spoke to Marc Raimondi of ESPN before UFC 281. The Highlight revealed that Makhachev winning the belt against Oliveira lit a fire under him. It is to be noted that his last fight in the UFC was a loss to Oliveira. Though, he clarified that it would have happened regardless of who won.
Speaking about his return, “Ideally, I’d like to fight when Kamaru fights. And then who? I dont know, my job is to fight.” Usman is rumored to come back in March so fans can expect Gaethje to return around the same time. Marc also asked him about Justin’s manager talking about a possible Conor McGregor fight.
“I lost so there’s a much greater chance that will happen. He only fights people coming off losses,” joked Gaethje when asked about the Conor match. He continued, “I don’t think it’s gonna happen, at all. I don’t think he fights.” He went on to elaborate, explaining how Conor may come back for a fight that’s based purely on its entertainment value.
It seems the 33-year-old isn’t interested in the big cheque that comes with fighting Conor. He made it clear in the interview that he was in the UFC to compete against the best. It remains to be seen who he fights when he returns though.
Who should Justin Gaethje fight when he comes back?
Justin Gaethje has fought some of the best fighters in the lightweight division throughout his career. His resume includes the likes of Michael Chandler, Tony Ferguson, and Edson Barbosa. As he looks to make his return in 2023, who should he fight in his comeback?
Justin’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz, talked about the possibility of a McGregor fight. However, with the American dismissing it, claiming that Conor is retired, that is no longer an option. Rafael Fiziev is a name that has been thrown around over the last few months. This can be traced back to Fiziev calling him out after he knocked out Rafael Dos Anjos.
Justin Gaethje also previously stated that he would be open to fighting the loser of UFC 280’s main event. Either Fiziev or Oliveira will certainly be very tough tests for Justin and a win against either would put him back in the discussion for an eventual title fight. Regardless of who he faces, Justin will surely put on a show for the fans and live up to his moniker of “The Highlight”.
