BMF champion Justin Gaethje has laid down his plans for his third UFC lightweight title challenge. Gaethje has a two-fight winning streak, defeating Rafael Fiziev and Dustin Poirier in the process. As such, he talked about the lightweight title picture and when he would fight for it ahead of UFC 300.

Justin Gaethje recently spoke with MMA Junkie, where he discussed the Charles Oliveira vs Arman Tsarukyan bout at UFC 300. He believed the winner of Oliveira vs. Tsarukyan would fight Islam Makhachev in June. According to Gaethje, he would till the end of the year to fight for the title.

They are calling the Oliveira and Tsarukyan fight a title eliminator. So, the winner of that fight fights him in June and I fight the winner of that, preferably in Madison Square Garden in November…we'll see if Oliveira s*** the bed again and I think Tsarukyan wins, I think he takes it.

At UFC 300, three lightweight title contenders are scheduled to fight. Gaethje will fight former featherweight king Max Holloway. Both the fights have garnered immense attention from fight fans. The Oliveira vs. Tsarukyan bout has received the label of title eliminator. As such, Gaethje felt he might not fight in June but rather wait till the end of the year to fight at MSG.

The idea of Dustin Poirier getting the title shot did not sit well with Gaethje. The rumors suggest Islam Makhachev might defend the belt against Poirier in June if the winner of Oliveira vs. Tsarukyan cannot make the June title defense date. The lightweight champion remains adamant about defending the title in June. As such, Poirier has entered the discussion due to his availability.

Justin Gaethje’s manager proposes Dustin Poirier vs. Islam Makhachev in June

Justin Gaethje and Dustin Poirier fought each other at UFC 291. During the main event in Salt Lake City, Gaethje knocked out ‘The Diamond’ in the second round. Many believe Gaethje remains ahead of Poirier in the title race, but that’s not entirely true.

Before Dustin Poirier’s last fight against Benoit Saint-Denis, Gaethje’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz, met with the Lousiana native. During the meeting, Abdelaziz asked Poirier about his willingness to fight Islam Makhachev in June. Ever since Poirier has repeatedly spoken about wanting to fight Makhachev for the title. It will likely be Poirier’s last shot at the title if it happens.

Alongside Gaethje, Abdelaziz also manages Islam Makhachev and wants to book a fight in June for Makhachev when returns from Ramadan. This entire situation has clashed with Gaethje’s plans and undoubtedly caused significant confusion. What happens next could only be answered after the UFC 300 PPV.
