In the electrifying UFC 291 main event, Justin Gaethje secured a stunning knockdown victory over Dustin Poirier. Seeing his former rival down on the mat, UFC star Conor McGregor publically issued a challenge to Justin Gaethje. However, the UFC 291 victor is not sure if he wants to take the fight.
Gaethje found himself living through moments that previous generations of fighters could only dream of.“I’m living such an incredible life,” Gaethje enthused during the post-fight news conference. ” I’m truly grateful for everything, and I thank God every day.” With an emphatic knockout victory over Dustin Poirier, Gaethje claimed the prestigious BMF title and avenged a prior defeat from April 2018. These accomplishments have propelled him closer to a shot at the undisputed UFC lightweight championship. Thus Gaethje has put himself in an enviable position among top contenders.
Sitting with his black BMF belt proudly displayed on the table, Gaethje reflected on the opportunities before him. MMA superstar Conor McGregor expressed his interest in facing Gaethje through a tweet after the fight.
McGregor is known as the biggest draw in the sport. While Gaethje was intrigued by the idea, he acknowledged there were obstacles. “McGregor has turned me down six times,” Gaethje revealed. “Usually, you have to lose to get a fight with him. I’m not entirely sure what’s going on… I’m not going to compete against someone on steroids,” Gaethje said. ” I’ve never used steroids in my life, and I never will… I want no part in fighting someone who cheats”.
Should a bout with McGregor not materialize, Gaethje could potentially face the winner of the showdown between champion Islam Makhachev and the next title challenger, Charles Oliveira, at UFC 294. It is set for October. Nevertheless, Gaethje leaves the decision-making to the UFC. He is adamant about not being the backup plan. “We’ll see, man,” Gaethje shrugged. “The UFC are the ones who make the calls, so it’s out of my hands. I have no idea what’s next”.
Justin Gaethje talks about future prospects and potential rematch
Many fans are yearning for a rematch between Justin Gaethje and Dustin Poirier. The two are currently 1-1 tie in their head-to-head series. Gaethje is not keen on an immediate rematch. He firmly believes that the decision for a trilogy fight should lie with Poirier.
“‘Let’s agree not to fight each other again unless it’s absolutely necessary,” Gaethje said. Gaethje is up for other opportunities and is ready to take on whatever opportunity presents itself. Gaethje explained. “I wouldn’t deny him the opportunity,… But I don’t want that to be my next fight”.
Gaethje has amassed an astounding 12 performance bonuses, an accomplishment unmatched in the UFC’s history. The MMA community excitedly awaits which challenge Gaethje will accept as he mulls over his next move. This could possibly add another awe-inspiring chapter to his brilliant career.
