As the division’s second-ranked contender, he is the highest-ranked fighter yet to face Makhachev. But recent fan skepticism arose from an online video.

In this footage, Gaethje, renowned for his aggressive fighting style, encountered a security guard in an Instagram story. The guard managed to maneuver Gaethje into a challenging hand lock towards the end of the video. This raised questions about his preparedness for Makhachev. Stating his willingness to fight for the title, Justin Gaethje stated: 

I’ve been here for a long time...but I’ve earned my spot. I knocked out Dustin Poirier...Is Islam Makhachev beatable? I don’t know, but I’m going to give everything as I always have.

Justin Gaethje is openly considering the possibility of a face-off with Conor McGregor down the line. In a recent Q&A session, Gaethje was asked about McGregor’s desire to fight him, and his response left no room for ambiguity. He confessed to having vividly envisioned putting an end to McGregor’s career. Although the idea of Gaethje and McGregor squaring off in the octagon is undoubtedly exciting, the reality is that there are no immediate plans in sight, making it unlikely to happen anytime soon.
