The main event of UFC 278 looked like another day in the office for the champion Kamaru Usman. While for the most part of the fight it looked like it. However, the whole scenario changed after the challenger Leon Edwards landed a head kick that put the champion to sleep.
This fight was a rematch from their first meeting in 2015. Kamaru won the first match via unanimous decision. Although Rocky did some damage in the first round. He was controlled and mauled for the rest of the fight.
After the loss, Edwards went to the drawing board to polish his skills further and massed up a 10-fight win streak. On the other hand, Usman went on to become the Welterweight champion and the P4P king. He was on a dominant run in the division knocking out top contenders. He even defeated some contenders twice.
At the beginning of the matchup at UFC 278, the improvement in Rocky’s game was obvious. As he defended the takedown from the Nigerian. Rocky then went on to take the champion down which no one was able to do in the UFC.
Kamaru Usman vows to bounce back with a vengeance
Although after a very good start to the fight. Usman started to take over and put pressure on the challenger. Edwards was visibly tired as he was trying to survive. As the fight progressed the Nigerian was able to take down Rocky more easily. The champion was slowly winning the rounds on the judge’s scorecard.
In what seems to be another successful title defence for the P4P king. As he was winning on the Judge’s score card with a huge margin and there were less than 2minutes left in the last round. However, Edwards did what we only see in movies and made a comeback no one expected. He knocked out the undisputed champion with a leg kick in the last minutes of the fight. The kick sent Usman crashing into the mat.
After losing his title at the hand of the Birmingham native, the Nigerian took to Twitter to address his fans and promised a comeback. The former Welterweight King wrote, “Champs f$ck up sometimes… but we bounce back and come with vengeance!! #NGHTMR”
The champ later tweeted to congratulate Edwards on his win and also reflect on his loss he wrote, “Damn I love this sport!!! Things happen but… Alhamdulillah we move!! congratulations @Leon_edwardsmma”
