“I don’t want to throw a timeline”- Kamaru Usman won’t say when his title bout with Leon Edwards will take place
Kamaru Usman
Leon Edwards has been in one of the most difficult positions in MMA for numerous years. Despite going undefeated in his last ten fights, Edwards has unable to receive a championship shot due to a combination of injuries, the COVID pandemic, and a few poor breaks. However, with welterweight champion Kamaru Usman having dispatched most of the top contenders, Edwards appears to be on his way to winning the title.
When Aaron Bronsteter questioned if Edwards was next in line for Usman, Dana White replied, “100%. That kid’s had a rough run. He deserves it. If you look at it, Colby lost to (Usman) twice, Gilbert lost, Leon’s next. He’s number three.”
Edwards will now have to prepare to face the world’s current top pound-for-pound fighter, a man who has already soundly defeated him once. While there is no specific date for a welterweight title fight, the best guess is that Usman and Edwards will face off sometime in late spring or early summer, based on the current schedule of events.
The UFC president believes his organization’s first London event in three years was a huge success. On the main card, six of the seven featured English fighters were victorious. With that in mind, it’s fair to assume that UFC London 2022 will be one of the most impressive presentations of British MMA talent.
White, on the other hand, believes that a welterweight championship match between Usman and Edwards would have enhanced the event. White told BT Sport in an interview:“The only thing that kills me tonight is that it would have been awesome for the main event to be Leon [Edwards] and [Kamaru] Usman. That would have been incredible here. That was the only thing tonight that’s missing if tonight is missing anything.”
“A lot tougher to heal right away“- Kamaru Usman states the reason why he is uncertain about a comeback date
Usman will defend his welterweight title against No. 2 challenger Leon Edwards at UFC 276 on July 2. The Nigerian Nightmare, on the other hand, is unlikely to meet that date because his recovery from hand surgery in February is taking longer than expected.
“The hand is doing a little better,” he told reporters at UFC 274. “I went to the doctor this week, and I can now make light hand contact.” When dealing with tendons that are significantly more difficult to repair quickly, this is exactly what happens. Especially when the knuckles are pressed against them.”
When asked about a certain comeback date, Usman stated: “I saw the doctor this week and I can start to make light contact with the hands. That’s just what sucks with these things, when you are dealing with tendons that are a lot tougher to heal right away. Especially when they are on top of the knuckles.“
