Former UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman offered words of advice for Israel Adesanya during a recent appearance on ESPN MMA’s DC & RC show. He offered a word of caution to Israel Adesanya, advising him against rushing into an immediate rematch. Usman’s own experiences serve as a warning against making hasty decisions after a challenging championship loss.
“Maybe next week..you’ll come out with a different result. But I think that’s part of the issue,” Usman observed. Kamaru Usman felt that the pace may have become a bit too relentless for Adesanya. He stated that ‘Izzy’ may have reached a point where a brief break might do him good. “Let your body recover,” Usman advised.
Usman understood the dangers of seeking quick redemption a while back. This came following a streak of tough title defeats that broke his otherwise perfect record. Last year, Kamaru Usman suffered a knockout loss to Leon Edwards in Salt Lake City. However, Usman ventured back for a quick rematch. This was less than seven months after the initial defeat. ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ was eager to reclaim his former glory.
However, Usman fell short on the judges’ scorecards, marking the first losing streak of his career. Adesanya, now facing a similar predicament, has the opportunity to learn from Usman’s candid admission of impatience.
What is next for Israel Adesanya after UFC 293 loss?
Israel Adesanya‘s career now stands at a crossroads. Adesanya had just reclaimed his title as the middleweight champion after he defeated Alex Pereira at UFC 287. This victory was highly celebrated and covered for an extended time on social media. Adesanya himself held pride for finally overcoming his long-time rival. However, UFC 293 turned out to be an upsetting defeat for Israel Adesanya. He failed to defend his title against Sean Strickland, whom Pereira had previously defeated at UFC 276.
Sean Strickland emerged victorious via unanimous decision after displaying a stunning performance. Strickland walked out with the championship belt as the new middleweight champion after walking into the fight as the underdog.
Following the event, Adesanya’s performance became a prominent topic of discussion. UFC President Dana White described it as sluggish and lackluster. As a result, numerous prominent figures, including Daniel Cormier, emphasized the importance of Adesanya taking a break. Cormier highlighted that Stickland’s accession to the middleweight throne ushered in new and more exciting prospects for future matchups. It will be interesting to witness what Israel Adesanya will do next. Will he make another attempt for the middleweight title? Or will move on to the next division like Alex Pereira? Only time will tell.
