Kelvin Gastelum faced a major setback when he had to withdraw from his upcoming fight against fan-favorite Shavkat Rakhmonov. This is due to a serious facial injury sustained during sparring. The anticipated bout, initially scheduled for Noche UFC in September, had to be canceled, disappointing both fighters and their fans.

In a heartfelt video posted on his social media, Kelvin Gastelum explained the unfortunate situation. He expressed his apologies to everyone eagerly waiting for the match. The injury, caused by an elbow strike, resulted in an open fracture and several fractured bones. This has left him unable to compete as planned. Despite the setback, Gastelum remains determined to continue his training, focusing on strength and conditioning exercises as well as working closely with his trainer. However, he admitted that there is currently no concrete plan for his next fight. But Gastelum is keen on rescheduling the match against Rakhmonov for a later date in 2023.

Gastelum is hopeful that the fight can be moved to November. He proposed having it at Madison Square Garden. Kelvin’s eagerness to get back in the octagon and return to his winning streak was evident in his words. He reassured fans that he will bounce back stronger. Rakhmonov, on the other hand, seemed less inclined towards the New York City idea and suggested having the fight in Abu Dhabi. UFC 294 was initially scheduled to take place there in October. He challenged Gastelum to accept the fight on his terms this time.

The 31-year-old Gastelum earlier defeated Chris Curtis in April, snapping a two-fight losing streak. Rakhmonov, on the other hand, has been sweeping the welterweight division, adding to his strong resume by winning over well-known competition.
