Zabit Magomedsharipov is an instance of what-could-have-been – that is, having retired at the young age of 31, arguably without ever having fought at his prime.

Magomedsharipov’s exploits in the cage are well remembered by UFC fans – an extremely dynamic striker, The Russian mixed in a bunch of acrobatic kicks and strikes, leaving his opponent spellbound and without adequate defence. Earlier this year, he wrote on his Instagram, “Assalamu alaikum friends. I know that many of you were waiting for my return, there was not a single day that someone did not ask when is my next fight was. But I decided to end my pro sports career”, and hence, announced his retirement from the sport.

However, Khabib Nurmagomedov might give fans something to cheer about. When asked if he talks with Magomedsharipov, he said, “I think he left because of personal reasons. It’ll be interesting to talk to him about it. Unlike me, he didn’t promise his mother. If you pique his interest, anything is possible., 50/50.”

In what seems to be a mighty revelation for any UFC fan, there could be a little window of opportunity for the ever-so-talented and skilled Russian to make his comeback. What will entice him, is yet to be seen – however, Khabib Nurmagomedov’s insistence might just do the trick.

Perhaps the greatest capitulation of Magomedsharipov’s career is that he went 6-0 in the UFC, which is a feat all by itself since the promotion is packed with top talent from across the world. On his way to being noticed by UFC fans, the Russian accumulated wins over big names in the featherweight division.

Entering the promotion in 2017, Magomedsharipov managed to notch up a win against Mike Santiago due to a rear naked choke, kickstarting his successful career in the UFC. From there, he went on to beat the likes of Kyle Bochniak, Brandon Davis and Jeremy Stephens.

However, his capstone achievement in the sport came against another skilled striker in Calvin Kattar, wherein the two headlined the Fight Night.
