Khabib Nurmagomedov reveals why he was worried for the fight between Islam Makhachev and Alexander Volkanovski
Former UFC lightweight champion and Hall Of Famer Khabib Nurmagomedov had a very decorated career during his run in the UFC. Following his retirement, he began promoting fights, donating to charities, and coaching his teammates to help advance their careers. Additionally, he has steadfastly supported his long-time friend and teammate, Islam Makhachev, consistently being present in his corner during most of his fights.
Recently, Nurmagomedov expressed concern about Makhachev’s past match against Alexander Volkanovski. During an interview with Gorilla Energy, Nurmagomedov revealed that the fight was difficult for Makhachev as it took place far away from his usual fight place in Abu Dhabi. He said, “Acclimatization and recovery was 11 hours less than Abu Dhabi, for Islam, when you have 11 hours, you can eat one time, sleep one time, and gain 2-3 kg. I understood it all, it may not have been visible to the viewers’. Makhchev fought Volkanovski in Perth, Australia.
“The Eagle” also said that in Makhachev’s home ground of Abu Dhabi, they would get in the cage after 39 hours. Whereas in Australia, they get in the cage in 28 hours. Nurmagomedov also explained, “Another time zone, time, these are no excuses because of this I was worried“. Nurmagomedov and his team have taken extreme measures to cut their weight before a fight.
The fight between Volkanovski and Makhachev remained close throughout the five rounds. Volkanovski made a strong start by landing some good punches and kicks, but Makhachev gradually gained control of the fight by using his grappling skill to great effect. He took “The Great” down multiple times and maintained control on the ground. Nevertheless, the Australian took over towards the end and dropped Islam as time ran out. Despite this, some fans believed that Volkanovski should have won the fight.
