While the UFC Hall of Famer stated he’d beat Khabib Nurmagomedov, he didn’t mean it as disrespect. He simply expressed his confidence when conversations emerged about the potential fight. Further, both the MMA legends have shared the utmost respect for each other and the former champion’s response reflected the same.
Once Khabib Nurmagomedov disclosed Georges St-Pierre was his father’s favorite fighter. Even recently, the Dagestani’s coach Javier Mendez felt GSP and ‘The Eagle’ were similar in nature. With records of 29-0 and 26-2, both fighters earned the UFC Hall of Fame and stood on the Mount Rushmore of the MMA world.
How would a fight between George St-Pierre and Khabib Nurmagomedov fare out?
Khabib Nurmagomedov was one of the best wrestlers in the UFC. Combining it with his brutal ground & pound and submission skills, he dominated his opponents. As such, he wouldn’t have changed his approach to a fight with GSP. But, St-Pierre was also a very skilled wrestler who mixed things and used a wide range of techniques. As such, the fight between them always remained intriguing. How would the fight go if they had fought?
George St-Pierre has always confidently stated he would’ve taken down Khabib Nurmagomedov. As much as the Dagestani dominated fights on the ground, he was never put down on his back for a longtime. So, that was the pathway for the Canadian star to blemish Nurmagomedov’s clean record. But, can he take him down? ‘Rush’ utilized this gameplan against BJ Penn who also had a superior ground game. As such, it was always a possibility. Other than that, GSP had the advantage over Nurmagoedov in the striking department. Also, fighting above a weight class he would size up higher than his opponent.
While Khabib Nurmagomedov’s dominance might blindside St-Pierre’s potential in their matchup, GSP had the edge. The fight would’ve most likely seen a lot of wrestling exchanges and went to a close decision. However, one could only wonder what would’ve happened. The Canadian star was only ready to come out of retirement to fight Nurmagomedov. Despite numerous talks, the fight never materialized. As such, it remained open-ended for the fans to debate about who would win. However, they’ve teased a potential grappling matchup and yearned for it to happen.
