This video of Khabib Nurmagomedov‘s father picking up Islam Makhachev at the age of 55 will truly shock you. Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov was no joke. The late combat sambo coach had all the skills to pick up even at the later stage of his life.
There are rarely any moments of Khabib Nurmagomedov’s success where he does not credit his father/mentor, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov. Even the coach of the former champion, Javier Mendez credits the Dagestani’s success to his father’s teachings. Islam Makhachev, who was a teammate of “The Eagle” since childhood was Abdulmanap’s favorite student.
Being a favorite student of Abdulmanap, Makhachev had to go receive some tough lessons. An old video of AKA head coach, Javier Mendez, shows Abdulmanap at the age of 55 effortlessly picking up the future champion off the floor while showcasing a wrestling move. Nurmagomedov can be seen saying to Mendez, “Coach, don’t joke with my father” as he laughs at his father’s incredible strength.
Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov lost his life at the age of 57 in the year 2020. The Eagle was fortunate to defend his lightweight belt in Abu Dhabi against Dustin Poirier in the presence of his father. The video was filmed during the former lightweight champ’s training camp ahead of UFC 242.

Khabib Nurmagomedov’s “father’s plan” was fulfilled at UFC 280
Khabib Nurmagomedov is undoubtedly the greatest lightweight fighter to ever grace the UFC octagon. Many believe his teammate, Islam Makhachev will soon pass the Dagestani as the greatest lightweight of all time. It was a long-time dream of Khabib’s father to make sure both his best students become UFC champions.
Since Nurmagomedov’s retirement in 2020, it was only a matter of time before Makhachev became the best lightweight in the world. And in UFC 280 last month, Makhachev dethroned Charles Oliveira in dominant fashion to become the best lightweight in the UFC. The former lightweight champ has been helping Makhachev train to become champion and fulfill his father’s plan.

Makhachev has also credited Khabib’s father for his success. The new lightweight champion was Abdulmanap’s favorite student and wants to do everything in his power to not stain his mentor’s legacy.
