UFC CEO Dana White rallied behind Paulo Costa at UFC 294 press conference. Costa was recently forced to withdraw from his highly-anticipated UFC 294 showdown with Khamzat Chimaev. Costa faced a significant setback when he landed in the hospital due to a severe staph infection in his elbow. The infection was so severe that three surgical procedures were required to rectify the damage. This rendered him medically unfit to participate in the fight.
During the UFC 294 press conference, Dana White openly acknowledged the situation, saying, “… Paulo Costa can be a pain in the ass, no doubt about it, but he’s seriously injured”. However, Khamzat Chimaev remained skeptical of Costa’s explanation. He vehemently responded to questions about Costa’s withdrawal. “The guy went home. He sh*t himself,” Chimaev said. ” Be honest, brother, he s** himself. That’s why he ran,” Chimaev told Dana.
Despite Chimaev’s doubts, Dana White firmly defended Costa’s credibility, stating, “It’s legit… If it wasn’t legit, I’d be the first one to say it.” The UFC CEO stated that Paulo Costa is genuinely suffering from a severe injury, and he had no choice but to prioritize his health. He smilingly said that it may not be what Khamzat wanted to hear, but it was the truth.
As of now, there’s no definitive timeline for Costa’s return to the octagon. Despite the staph infection, Costa was determined to compete, but medical professionals prohibited it. UFC officials eventually secured Kamaru Usman as Chimaev’s new opponent.
Khamzat Chimaev compares himself with Kamaru Usman; accuses Usman of only fighting for money
Khamzat Chimaev expressed contentment about the opportunity to face Usman for UFC 294 finally. He revealed that Kamaru Usman was someone he had his sights on for some time.

During a media day interview, Chimaev conveyed that people have consistently discussed Khamzat and Usman since he first entered the UFC. According to Chimaev, Usman resembled a fighter similar to him, but he was the older model, whereas Chimaev represented the modern version. He likened it to the introduction of new iPhones, where Usman was like the iPhone 5, and he’s more of the Pro model, emphasizing the distinction.
Chimaev was forthright in addressing his view of Usman’s motivations. He asserted that Usman’s primary objective was financial gain. Chimaev believed the fight with him promised a substantial payday, motivating Usman to enter the Octagon.
