Khamzat Chimaev, the unbeaten UFC middleweight contender, recently offered an update on his major surgery. He also announced his intention to return for the historic UFC 300 show. Chimaev made the announcement in which he answered fan questions. He discussed the right-hand injury he suffered in his fight against Kamaru Usman in October.

Chimaev indicated that he will have surgery on his injured hand in the next week or two. The procedure should address any remaining difficulties from the injury and pave the road for his rehabilitation. Despite the approaching medical operation, Khamzat Chimaev remained upbeat and strongly believed that he would return to the octagon after his recovery. This is what he said:

I’m going to do surgery, operation in one, two weeks, after that, I’ll do the recovery, come back, smash somebody… Tell Dana White, make that [UFC 300] happen

How and when did Khamzat Chimaev injure his hand?

Khamzat Chimaev suffered a hand injury during his victory against Kamaru Usman at UFC 294 on October 21 in Abu Dhabi. The undefeated UFC middleweight thought he had fractured his right hand in the first round, posing a big obstacle to his attacking abilities. The former welterweight champion Usman came in on short notice after Paulo Costa withdrew due to injury.

Majdi Shammas, Chimaev’s manager, emphasized that the injury was a torn ligament rather than a fracture. While the torn ligament did not necessitate emergency surgery, it did influence Chimaev’s performance throughout the bout. Despite this setback, Chimaev showed tenacity and defeated Usman by majority decision.

Chimaev’s damaged ligament was maintained with a brace for the next four weeks, following which the injury will be evaluated. As for what we know now, the injury seems greater than initially expected. He now requires surgery on the said hand and a recovery period before he can step back into the octagon.
