Former welterweight champion Kamaru Usman faces off against Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 294. Chimaev, the unbeaten rising contender, stands at 12-0 MMA, and 6-0 within the promotion. The two will make their middleweight debut on Oct. 21.
In his last bout, Chimaev was seemingly forced up from welterweight after coming in 7.5 lbs heavier. He thus faced Kevin Holland instead of Nate Diaz. He now sits comfortably at 185.5 lbs.
Ahead of his UFC 294 debut, Chimaev in an interview with ESPN’s Megan Olivi talked about his enhanced performance in the absence of grueling weight cuts:
I don't cutting weight anymore...So my condition is unlimited. So I can't get tired in the fights, man!
Chimaev also said that although it is still hard work, life as a middleweight contender is easier than at 170 lbs. He reaffirmed his coaches about his resolution to come out on top as the best in the world.
Chimaev was the source of great controversy at UFC 279 when he missed weight by overshooting above 170 lbs. Borz was firmly criticized by fans, whom he went on to antagonize. He later revealed that the promotion made him switch up his fight card against Diaz. He has no such issue this time around against Usman.
Meanwhile, Usman has tipped the scale of the non-titular limit at 184.5 lbs, sitting close to Chimaev. The fight provides them with a leeway into the middleweight titular entry post-UFC 294. The Nigerian Nightmare has already defeated champion Sean Strickland, with a unanimous decision at UFC 210, albeit at welterweight.
Khamzat Chimaev considers himself a whole stratosphere above Sean Strickland
Khamzat Chimaev faces former welterweight champion Kamaru Usman in Saturday’s UFC 294 co-headliner at Etihad Arena. In what has been dubbed the match between top contenders, the bout is a lead-up to 185 lbs champion, Sean Strickland.
Champion Strickland has trained with Chimaev before. The latter mentioned that nothing worrisome struck him. He respects Strickland’s fighting spirit but considers himself far superior to him. He also mentioned being a ‘stratosphere’ level above him in all scopes and skill sets.
Additionally, Chimaev also credited the champion for presenting Israel Adesanya with a different type of challenge in his dominant win over him at UFC 293. He considers this as the blueprint on how to defeat “The Stylebender” in-ring.
