Khamzat Chimaev is ready to fight literally anybody from the top of the food chain. Chimaev himself saw a huge bump to the #3 spot in the welterweight rankings after his amazing fight against Gilbert Burns. Khamzat’s win over Gilbert not only saw him rise in the rankings but also showed the world that he has a great heart and can hang in there, if not dominate the top of the welterweight division.

Khamzat was on a call-out spree a few months back prior to his matchup against Burns. Now that he has a win, Chimaev is looking to seal the title shot as soon as possible. Leon Edwards, who is ranked #2 in the welterweight division has been missing his chance to fight for the title for a long time and it looks like Edwards will have to sit out his dreams for a longer time.

Welterweight king Kamaru Usman after making a series of title defenses last year is now sidelined due to an injury. Chimaev, who was hinted to fight Colby Covington by the UFC boss, is now looking to reignite his fight against the British welterweight contender. “Let’s fight 👊🏻💥@Leon_edwardsmma,” wrote Chimaev in his recent tweet.

It is still uncertain when the champion of the division will be back. Though Dana White has confirmed that Leon will be the next in line for the title shot when Usman returns to the octagon, no contracts have been signed between the two fighters given the uncertainty of Kamaru’s return. However, there is only so much time that a top contender like Edwards can be sidelined and the division can be put on hold.

Khamzat and Leon were previously supposed to fight in 2020 when the pandemic broke out. The two fighters were booked multiple times but the fight never materialized as both of them caught the virus and were sidelined. This looks like a perfect opportunity for both the fighters to meet again before they actually test their skills against the #1 pound-for-pound champion in MMA.

Do you agree that Khamzat Chimaev and Leon Edwards should fight for the interim welterweight belt?
