“We’re athletes of HIGHEST calibre,” Khamzat Chimaev’s weigh-in debacle proved to be a circus for Robert Whittaker
Robert Whittaker- Khamzat Chimaev
Khamzat Chimaev is an athlete on par with the best welterweights in the world, but UFC 279 fight week ended with him being the centre of unforeseen chaos that eventually made the fight card better but put forth another scenario of unprofessionalism, regardless. Chimaev might probably move up and stay at 185 lbs from now on, perhaps, starting his journey to prove himself as a worthy title contender all over again. Only the next fight will steer his decided weight class to fight for the UFC.
Chimaev was originally supposed to fight against former UFC fighter and MMA legend Nate Diaz in the main-event slot, the weigh-in limit to fight Diaz was 171 lbs. But Chimaev came out at 178.5 lbs due to the medical advice of restriction to cut any more weight. So, therefore, he was made to fight against Kevin Holland in the co-main slot, who was almost the same weight since the latter was fighting at catchweight. Chimaev defeated Holland via first-round submission.
“We’re in the highest stage of setting an example,” says Robert Whittaker reacting to Khamzat Chimaev
In an interview with James Lynch under the banner of MMA news outlet Middle Easy, former UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker talks about his win against Marvin Vettori at UFC Paris, his reaction to Diaz submitting Tony Ferguson in the main event of UFC 279, his next fight, the passing of Canadian MMA fighter Elias Theodorou and much more. In the midst of all, Whittaker also reacted to Chimaev’s weigh-in debacle. Not much was said, but Whittaker’s words have weight and respect in the MMA community, regardless.
“It was a bit of a circus, to be honest,” says Whittaker. “We’re professionals. We’re in the highest stage of setting an example for [youth]… you know we’re athletes of the highest calibre…” he concluded.
What do you make of Whittaker’s assessment of Chimaev’s weigh-in debacle? Do you think Chimaev can resume fighting at welterweight or should he move up to middleweight, regardless? Who do you think Chimaev fights against next? Who do you think Whittaker fights against next? Where do you put Chimaev against the fastest-rising athletes in the current UFC roster? Where do you put Whittaker amongst the most fan-favourite fighters of all time?
