UFC Featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski took his shot at the lightweight title against Islam Makhachev in a closely contested five-rounder at UFC 284. To review the fight, Henry Cejudo sat down to analyze Volkanovski and also had words of praise for Volkanovski’s defensive wrestling.
Henry Cejudo is a former two-division UFC champion who announced his retirement after successfully defending his Bantamweight championship against Dominick Cruz in 2020. After his victory over Cruz, Cejudo first appeared in an episode of the Joe Rogan Experience expressing interest in fighting featherweight champ, Alexander Volkanovski. However, it is worth noting that Cejudo might return to the Octagon anytime soon, as he is back in the testing pool once again.
In one of his recent videos on his YouTube, the triple C reviewed Makhachev vs Volkanovski at UFC 284 and analyzed the closely contested fight. “Guess what, Alexander? I wasn’t giving you a chance with Islam Makhachev. Alexander Volkanovski’s a lot better than I thought he was defensively,” Cejudo continued.
“OK, he defended a couple of takedowns, but guess what? Islam’s not an Olympic champion. Guess what? Islam doesn’t have my striking. Guess what? He’s not faster than me,” Cejudo explained.
A glance at Henry Cejudo’s potential opponents upon return to the UFC octagon for another bantamweight championship run
Henry Cejudo’s exit from UFC did not come as a big setback for Dana White due to the fighter’s inability to draw PPVs. Despite becoming one of the most solid champions in the UFC, Cejudo felt he was being overlooked and underpaid by the UFC.
Cejudo’s retirement came at a time when the bantamweight division was not at the level it is today. Since then, fighters like Cory Sandhagen, Sean O’Malley, Petr Yan, and Aljamain Sterling have taken over the division.
Since Cejudo’s retirement, the bantamweight division has become more active and is being looked at as one of the toughest divisions to crack for up-and-coming fighters. Recent interviews with bantamweight fighters have revealed that Henry Cejudo could find a potential opponent in Sean O’Malley for an interim bantamweight championship.
Current UFC bantamweight champion, Aljamain Sterling is in after undergoing surgery due to a torn bicep muscle. Sterling has also expressed interest in fighting Triple C upon return. Another fight that could excite fans would be a fight with Alexander Volkanovski if Cejudo ever decides to move up to the featherweight division.
