The backlash to Dana White’s new Power Slap League is increasingly severe. Following the recent debut of the controversial show, veteran referee John McCarthy slammed the UFC President for supporting the unnecessarily violent sport.

John McCarthy, who is a long-time referee helped shape MMA officiating. After witnessing veteran colleagues like Jazon Herzog take part in the Power Slap league’s officiating, ‘Big’ John was appalled. McCarthy went on a Twitter ramble refusing to promote the new show produced by Dana White.

The referee even went to the extent of comparing the sport of slap-fighting to that of watching a train wreck. “The skill level is only what God allows you to withstand. Handing out Trauma to the brain with no ability to defend against it only makes this appeal to people wanting to see a train crash and that’s what they will get,” wrote Big John in his tweet.

McCarthy also went on to urge Nevada licensed officials to reject any offers from the Power Slap show. “No licensed Nevada official should be taking any part in this,” wrote John. He warns that everyone would be held accountable for their decision eventually.

As much as the UFC boss is excited about his new venture, a lot of the critics believe this will follow the same path as some of his other failures. Fans and media believe Power Slap will see the same fate as “The Ultimate Surfer” and “Zuffa Boxing”.

Fans also reacted on Twitter claiming there is little to no skill involved in the sport of slap-fighting. The biggest counter to the sport has been the inability of fighters to defend themselves from the slap. McCarthy’s thoughts resonate along the same lines.

The ratings for the premiere of the show on television were very poor. White, however, is still sold on the idea of the ‘sport’. What are your thoughts on slap fighting?
