Leon Edwards after winning the welterweight belt.
Leon Edwards just delivered one of the biggest upsets in the history of MMA fighting. Edwards dropped Kamaru Usman with a brutal leg kick out of nowhere and became the new undisputed welterweight champion.
Going into the fight Edwards was the underdog and nobody thought he was going to win. Usman has been an amazing champion in the last few years and has shown from time to time why he’s the pound-for-pound number one.
Edwards had many doubters but the fighter was confident about himself. The fight was extremely entertaining and both the fighters gave their best. Edwards showed Usman that he has developed a lot since the last time they shared the octagon in 2015. However, it wasn’t enough to beat the ‘Nigerian Nightmare‘ who was continuously outworking Edwards.
It looked like an easy decision win for Usman but shockingly, the Brit landed a beautiful head kick in the fifth round. It precisely connected and knocked out Usman hence, ending his reign as the welterweight champion.

The fighter addressed his haters and doubters who questioned his ambitions and asked them to look at him now. Edwards explained that he would like to dedicate this win to his home city and the kids there who dream of achieving greatness.
“Can’t put it through words Joe, It’s been a long long four years. You all doubted me. They all said I couldn’t do it. Look at me now! Pound-for-pound, headshot dead, that’s it….it doesn’t matter I’m from the trenches, I’m built like this. I’ve been down my whole life now look at me now!! I did it for Birmingham, I did it for the kids that I grew up in the trenches. I did it for everyone coming behind me. I told you it’s possible,we can win a belt from the UK.
