“You wait now, mate” – Leon Edwards’ coach BRUTALLY PUSHES Jorge Masvidal to the back of the line in potential match-ups for the Welterweight Champion

“You wait now, mate” – Leon Edwards’ coach BRUTALLY PUSHES Jorge Masvidal to the back of the line in potential match-ups for the Welterweight Champion

Leon Edwards and Jorge Masvidal are anything but friends. Jorge Masvidal had just defeated British star Darren Till at UFC London in 2019, in a spectacular KO that absolutely slept the heavily-regarded Welterweight. Off a big win, Masvidal was being interviewed by Laura Sanko, when he and Leon Edwards got into a scuffle, leading to the Briton enduring a minor cut under his eye.

Since 2019, Jorge Masvidal has become one of the highest-paid superstars within the UFC, alongside Irishman Conor McGregor and Nigerian-Kiwi Israel Adesanya. He dresses like Tony Montana, fights like his mentor Kimbo Slice, and lives in the city of vice – Miami. All of these elements, plus his natural pull on the mic have made him a household name, and a fight fan darling.

On the up, Masvidal regularly dismissed any talks of settling the feud with Edwards in the cage, aiming instead for the “bigger names”, a-la Colby Covington, Kamaru Usman, and even Conor McGregor. The case can be made to call Edwards the division’s second most avoided fighter, with Dana White revealing that many higher-ranked fighters had refused to sign on the dotted line to face the Briton.

It seems as if the tables have turned. Leon Edwards has beat the pound-for-pound No.1 fighter, Kamaru Usman to climb the mountain and rest as champion atop the Welterweight rankings. Jorge Masvidal, who unsuccessfully challenged for the title twice, is ranked No.9; unfazed, he is calling for yet another shot at the title. Quite fittingly, Dave Lovell of Team Renegade, “Rocky’s” coach has delivered brutal jibes at not only Masvidal but big-mouth Colby Covington as well.

In an interview with Mike Bohn, Lovell asked “Little rat Judas” to wait at the back of the line, as he had himself asked of Edwards a couple of years ago. This week, Dave Lovell has done several interviews with the media, and the common theme in all these interviews is the level of passion he feels towards his pupil overcoming adversity and finally claiming the Welterweight throne.

Addressing Masvidal, he said, “Your time will come also, but we’re picking on our terms. The same way you told Leon wait at the back of the line, well you wait now mate, because Leon is at the top of the hill.” It only seems fair for Masvidal to be told off not only by Lovell but also UFC colour commentator Daniel Cormier, ridiculing the Miami native’s aspiration for a title shot, off the back of three consecutive losses.

Additionally, Lovell also targeted his words at perennial Welterweight instigator Colby Covington – who had called Edwards “Leon Scott” and ”Edward Scissorhands” in jest. Long-time title challenger Covington, who Dana White himself believed would be Welterweight champion if not for Kamaru Usman, must have been shell-shocked seeing his seemingly invincible adversary being beaten in the most spectacular fashion.

Lovell speculated that the UFC will try to push Khamzat Chimaev into the title picture somehow if he manages to beat Nate Diaz on the 10th of September. Who do you think will face Edwards next in his first title defense? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
