“The CLEAREST #1 contender,” Chael Sonnen believes that Colby Covington should be next in line for title shot against Leon Edwards

While many are rooting for Leon Edwards to defend his new title in a trilogy rematch against Kamaru Usman, Chael Sonnen has a completely unique suggestion, like a number randomly rolled out of dice. Edwards, the new UFC welterweight champion last fought at UFC 278 when he defeated the preceding champion Kamaru Usman via a spectacular last-round knockout in a fight that Edwards was dominantly losing.

Edwards is now in a position where he is most likely to fight where wants to fight next, but in order to have his say on who he wants to fight next, Edwards has to make some negotiations with the UFC. Edwards has said that he is most likely to fight Usman next year in 2023 and the location might most likely be Wembley Stadium in England, however, Edwards has built up a story against Jorge Masvidal so that fight could sell well and who knows that fight happens as part of Edwards’ first title defence OR maybe THAT name which “The Bad Guy” Sonnen vouches for.

Chael Sonnen believes that there are not many players left on the board to immediately fight Leon Edwards for the title

In an interview at The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, Sonnen talks about Edwards’ power to choose his next fight, what can be next for Kamaru Usman, Nate Diaz, Khamzat Chimaev, Tony Ferguson, Jon Jones and much more. In the midst of all, Sonnen brings out former interim UFC welterweight champion Colby Covington’s name and how the fellow homeboy qualifies for a third title shot in his UFC career.

Colby Covington is the clearest #1 contender the sport has,” says Sonnen with regards to the amount of medical suspension Usman will be handed by the athletic commission for the brutal head-kick KO loss against Edwards. “Covington was the interim champion who never lost it and woke up one day and is no longer the interim champion. Covington beat the sitting BMF but doesn’t get the belt like there’s some stuff that has been wildly- I don’t want to say unfair but very close to that- I think you’ve to sweeten the pot to get him and there’s not a lot of players left on the board…” continues Sonnen.

Covington last fought at UFC 272 when he defeated former friend and bitter rival Jorge Masvidal via unanimous decision. Covington has got 2 title shots in his UFC career, both against Usman and both the contests were very close competition but Usman was the superior fighter. Covington’s career wins include the likes of Masvidal, Rafael Dos Anjos, Tyron Woodley, Demian Maia and many more. Do you think Edwards vs Covington makes all the sense for the next welterweight title fight in the UFC, even more so than Usman vs Edwards trilogy?
