“Will never BREAK to a man like Paulo Costa,” Luke Rockhold gets fired up talking about his return to the Octagon at UFC 278
Luke Rockhold
Luke Rockhold has always been an elite athlete with a rather stone-cold attitude during the build-up of his fights, but this time, he is bringing an altogether different energy, a much fierce one. Rockhold, the former Strikeforce middleweight champion and the former UFC champion, last fought 3 years ago losing via knockout to former UFC light-heavyweight champion Jan Blachowicz. Now, Rockhold is returning this weekend at UFC 278 when he will face former UFC title challenger Paulo Costa.
Luke Rockhold in his prime, which may come again provided he wins against Costa, was one of the most dangerous fighters in the MMA world. His wins include the likes of Michael Bisping, Chris Weidman, David Brance, Lyoto Machida, Tim Boetsch, Tim Kennedy, Ronald Souza and many more. Rockhold is a powerful grappling specialist but has some slick moves in the striking department and is widely known for his question mark kick that confuses and lands significantly on his opponent.
Luke Rockhold commits to not quit at any cost in his next fight at UFC 278
In an interview with UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier, Rockhold talks about the time he fought Blachowicz, the comeback process, his fight against Costa, his training camp method, reminiscing the good old days at his training centre, American Kickboxing Academy and much more. In the midst of all, Rockhold explains to Cormier why he still wants to return to fighting despite having done it all in his career and now that he has been settled well without the sport for the past 3 years.
“I’m a f**king man… have you ever seen me quit? Have you ever seen me break in a fight? Have I ever broken in a fight? I have been caught, I have been dropped, but have I broken in a fight? I am a man, and I will never break to a man like Paulo Costa. This is a mental battle, I have given my f**king life, 7 months of my life. I have given up [myself into] sobriety, I have given every day to this. Everyday to be the best athlete I could ever be, the best mentally, physically every preparation to get to this f**king point…” continues Rockhold.
What do you make of Luke Rockhold’s fierce response to finding his “why” in fighting Paulo Costa? Do you think Rockhold will pull off the most spectacular win from a comeback in UFC history? Where do you put Rockhold amongst the best fighters of their time? Win or lose, Rockhold has definitely earned the respect of the MMA community and will definitely leave a sad moment for the fans the day he decides to retire.
