Domestic abuse is a serious issue that thousands of households suffer across the world. UFC contender Mackenzie Dern talks about her experience with domestic abuse.
Mackenzie Dern is a professional Brazilian mixed martial artist and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner. She is an ADCC and No-Gi BJJ World Champion. Dern currently ranks #7 in UFC Women’s Strawweight division. In a recent interview with Ariel Helwani Dern opens up about he former spouse allegedly physically abusing her while they were still together.
Mackenzie Dern’s husband Wesley Santos is a professional surfer. In the interview on The MMA Hour, Mackenzie recounts instances when her husband would deliberately create situations to get a reaction out of her. Since she was a professional MMA fighter, Santos allegedly would try to paint her the light of an aggressor. According to her, he did this so he could call the police or sue her in court. She revealed that living with a person as such was definitely not a good idea. She champions women and their ability to defend themselves but said she felt trapped since she couldn’t do so herself.
Ariel Helwani asked Dern if she was physically abused in the relationship. She simply replied, “Yeah”. Dern claimed that she always put her family first regardless of what she was going through. However, the relationship go to the point where it was no longer viable for her to continue safely. Which is why she decided to step away. “I wasn’t even able to defend myself… Police were getting called to the house“. It was just getting out of control. And going through that in front of your daughter, you don’t want your daughter to witness that,” she said.

Reportedly, Santos claims to be innocent and the actual victim in this case. “I never attacked Mackenzie, she is an MMA fighter…I would stand no chance,” he said in court.
The judiciary has sided with neither of the parties claiming the two partners appear to have engaged in mutual combat. As the primary earner in the relationship, Mackenzie is to pay a sum total of $4,006 each month as spousal and child support.
