“My life LITERALLY changed,” Marlon Vera talks about the impact of longtime MMA coach Jason Parillo on his career

Marlon Vera- Jason Parillo

Marlon Vera is a name that is respected across the MMA community so highly today, for him, if it was not for Jason Parillo, he thinks he would’ve never travelled the road of further success. Vera is the #5 ranked UFC bantamweight who’s coming off the biggest win of his career when he defeated former WEC-UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz last month at UFC San Diego. That is the second world champion in Vera’s resume to go down in his list of wins.

In an interview with Submission Radio, Vera talks about his reaction to Cory Sandhagen’s call out of him, his grandfather’s influence in his life, his prediction of Petr Yan vs Sean O’Malley, how a fight against him vs Sandhagen will play out, Jose Aldo’s retirement, prediction of Aljamain Sterling vs TJ Dillashaw and much more. In the midst of all, Vera also talks about the influence of his coach Jason Parillo, who’s the head coach of the RVCA gym, on his career.

“When I finally got to train with Jason Parillo was when literally my life changed, I was like, okay, this is the person that’s gonna take me to the next level, this is the person that’s gonna say less, do less but I will become the fighter I am, even if I have the talent, the balls, the will… I was trying to get to train with him since 2017, he is a busy guy, he was busy making [Michael] Bisping the world champion, RDA and the list goes on and on…” said Vera.

Vera reflected back on the opponent of his last fight, Dominick Cruz and had some words of praise for the UFC legend. Cruz was the last WEC bantamweight champion and the first UFC bantamweight champion. He has wins over the likes of TJ Dillashaw, Urijah Faber, Joseph Benavidez, Pedro Munhoz, Casey Kenny, Demetrious Jonhson and many more.

“Well you know, he’s a top 5,” says Vera. “He’s still coming in really good shape, he’s still good and he brings it, you know. That’s a guy that’s never been stopped or never been beat in a fight that is a non-title fight. That [win over Cruz] was a big statement, you know. If he could’ve beat me, he could’ve fought for the title right away…” he continued.

What do you make of Vera’s words on coach Parillo and his former opponent Cruz? Where do you put Parillo amongst the best MMA coaches of all time? As mentioned by Vera, Parillo has trained former UFC champions Michael Bisping and Rafael Dos Anjos. Besides them, he has also trained other UFC Hall of Famers before Bisping such as Tito Ortiz and BJ Penn. Currently, he trains Vera, UFC strawweight Mackenzie Dern and many others.
