Merab Dvalishvili is ‘SCARY’ claims Sean O’Malley’s coach Tim Welch ahead of potential title fight

Sean O’Malley is the bantamweight king of the UFC. His coach, Tim Welch, played a pivotal role in his rise to the top. Welch recently examined the challenges posed by Merab Dvalishvili. He labeled the Georgian fighter as a formidable opponent. Welch showed his appreciation of Dvalishvili’s relentless cardio and grappling prowess.
Tim Welch came on The MMA Hour show with Ariel Helwani. Welch didn’t mince words when describing Merab Dvalishvili’s capabilities. He talked about the various aspects that made Dvalishvili dangerous. This is what Welch said:
Merab is just an animal. Anyone who has a 10-fight win streak has a certain confidence in themselves, which is scary in itself. His five-round cardio is so scary. I know also, he’s never faced anybody like Sean [O’Malley]. It’s gonna be a big cage. I’m really excited.Tim Welch via The MMA Hour
Tim Welch had a firm belief in Sean O’Malley’s chances of success. He cited the distinct challenges Merab Dvalishvili had yet to encounter. Welch hinted at O’Malley’s unorthodox striking and movement styles, which could pose problems. The potential showdown between O’Malley and Dvalishvili would determine the next bantamweight champion. Welch expressed excitement for this high-stakes matchup.
Recently, Sean O’Malley showed a striking masterclass against Marlon Vera at UFC 299. For five rounds, he outpointed Vera while taking minimal damage himself. On the other hand, Merab Dvalishvili secured a dominant victory over Henry Cejudo, making himself the prime contender for the title shot.
Tim Welch gives his take on areas Sean O’Malley could work on
As Sean O’Malley’s head coach, Tim Welch identified an area where his star pupil could improve. Welch openly discussed O’Malley’s ground game, acknowledging the need for further development. He stated the champion’s grappling skills have room for growth.
Welch acknowledged O’Malley’s prowess in striking. He believed O’Malley had not yet maximized his grappling abilities. O’Malley has a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Welch also stated that O’Malley’s front headlocks and guard were dangerous. However, he felt O’Malley’s ground game wasn’t as strong as it could be.
The coach thought fight fans had yet to see O’Malley’s full mat skills yet. Welch hinted O’Malley’s submissions might surprise people. O’Malley is known for striking. But Welch said they’re making him a well-rounded fighter.
