Conor McGregor is the most popular fighter in the UFC. The former UFC champion recently responded to Meryl Streep’s controversial comments about MMA. McGregor addressed the remarks made by the three-time Oscar winner at the premiere of the film Road House in New York City.
Road House was Conor McGregor’s acting debut. He admitted that Streep’s comments motivated him to prove her statement wrong. The Irish athlete acknowledged the brutal nature of MMA but emphasized the artistry involved. This is what he stated:
Fighting is the most beautiful form of art… I was really taken aback because fighting is an art. It’s real artistry for those who do what we do, so I came in [to film Road House] with maybe a little chip on my shoulder.Conor McGregor via The Hollywood Reporter
McGregor revealed that he took his role in Road House very seriously. He wanted to show his sport accurately. Jake Gyllenhaal said McGregor accidentally hit him during filming. Lukas Gage, who plays a bartender, revealed having intense fight training with the Irish fighter.
McGregor’s response to Streep’s comments showed the link between the arts and sports. Even if people disagree, McGregor still believed that MMA was an art. It remains to be seen if ‘The Notorious‘ will actually foray more into the Hollywood scene. He is set to return to the octagon this summer.
Meryl Streep’s infuriating comments about MMA in 2017
Famous actress Meryl Streep created controversy with her remarks about MMA at the Golden Globes in 2017. She received the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the event. Streep made a statement following this acceptance that drew backlash from the MMA community.
Streep made a statement that tried to showcase the importance of foreigners in the Hollywood industry. She insinuated that these outsiders were the real talent within Hollywood. Streep further insinuated that kicking them out would produce detrimental results for the entertainment industry. If that happens, she claimed, people won’t have anything to watch other than mixed martial arts and football. She felt combat sports did not categorize as ‘arts.’
The famous crowd erupted in thunderous ovation upon hearing Streep’s remark. However, others in the combat sports industry were offended by her tone of disdain for MMA as a respectable art form. Many MMA fighters and fans took offense. They argued that the discipline requires immense skill, dedication, and artistry. This included the recent comments from Conor McGregor.
