One of the most prestigious opportunities in Michael Bisping‘s career to date was fighting Anderson Silva in 2016. Hence, winning against the former UFC middleweight champion was equally an opportunistic boon. Bisping had built a great resume up to that point. But a title shot was yet in his future. The Brit lost some key bouts to the likes of Luke Rockhold and Chael Sonnen, forcing him to rebuild time and time again.

So, the headlining spot on UFC Fight Night 84 in his home country against the ‘Spider’ was quite the deal. In a recently surfaced IG reel, Bisping iterates how Silva’s blows had knocked out his mouthguard. While pointing towards it, the fighter with a right retinal detachment, caught the rival’s infamous jump-knee to the face. Check out his commentary on it:

I was doing good then Anderson catches me with something, my mouthpiece flies out – this is my bad eye...so Anderson’s in front of me, and I’m backing away...I have to wait until there’s a lull in the action...so I turn and I look at Herb Dean and go, ‘Herb, my mouthpiece.’ And I point at it on the floor, but as I said, this eye doesn’t work very well, so when I turned there, Anderson’s there...and I couldn’t see him, and then when I looked back, Anderson’s in mid-air, boom! Lands a beautiful flying knee...Herb Dean comes in. And I go 'I'm not out'. And he says 'Yeah, I know'.

Bisping had told Burt Watson in MMA Junkie’s “Legend 2 Legend” series that Silva was a big deal for him. And the fighter acted as such. Even downed, the fighter wasn’t out of the fight yet. Taking a front kick to the face in the 5th round, Bisping got up and managed a takedown. With ‘The Count’ taking round 1,2, and 4, he was unanimously scored 48-47.

A prime reaction to the matter read – “One-eyed lion of the British empire.” The win over Silva was Bisping’s third straight, opening up a UFC 199 title shot against Rockhold, who submitted him before. A huge underdog in the fight, Bisping preferred it that way and came out on top. This has garnered some apt reactions.

Back in the day, Bisping won big against the ‘Spider’ even without a dominant finish. After an even third round, Bisping had made the fatal error of letting his mouthpiece loose.

While Bisping gestured in referee Herb Dean’s direction, Dean did not call for a break. He thus attracted a jumping knee to the face. Silva had hopped the fence celebrating, thinking he had won.

Here’s how a few fans have reacted to the matter –

Bisping survived Silva. In the closing seconds of the third round, Bisping received a thunderous flying knee that sent him to the canvas. He did bounce back for the bell though. And fans have praised him for the championship-worthy effort.

Time and again he has alluded to fighting Silva as good as a world title fight. But as fan perceptions would suggest, his efforts echoed similarly.
