Michael Chandler might be the most passionate fighter to ask for a Conor McGregor fight but he doesn’t seem to be as attached to the idea as his promotion skills would convince you otherwise. Chandler is the #5 ranked UFC lightweight in the official UFC rankings and last fought at UFC 274 when he pulled off a potential knockout of the year against former interim UFC lightweight champion Tony Ferguson in the second round of their back and forth.

McGregor last fought in July 2021 when he lost to former interim UFC lightweight champion Dustin Poirier in their epic trilogy via doctor stoppage at the end of the first round as McGregor fractures his shin bone. Since then, McGregor has recovered from this gruesome injury successfully and is planning to return against a notable opponent, for McGregor, he desires a title shot either at lightweight or welterweight, more preferably at 170 lbs against Kamaru Usman.

In MMA Fighting’s The Fighter vs The Writer segment with journalist Damon Martin, Michael Chandler talks about his potential matchup against Dustin Poirier, his ranking of the Tony Ferguson knockout among all his historic knockouts, and much more. In the midst of all, Chandler explains what doesn’t make him completely stake his future upon the likelihood of a huge money fight against McGregor.

“We don’t know when is Conor coming back,” says Chandler “So with that amount of uncertainty it would be really foolish to hitch your wagon to that fight itself? Do I want the fight? Of course! Do I think the fight is going to happen? Absolutely! But my #1 goal isn’t to fight Conor, it’s to win the title, my #1 goal is to become the UFC champion, to be the #1 guy on the entire planet…” concludes Chandler.
