“I don’t need to prove myself,” Free agent star Michael ‘Venom’ Page wants Michael Chandler treatment from Dana White’s UFC
Michael Page wants to fight Michael Chandler if he signs with the premier MMA promotion in the near future.
Michael Chandler and Michael Page
Michael “Venom” Page expressed his desire to fight a top contender if he signs with the UFC. Page, who fought recently in Bellator, has been seen at UFC events and is currently a free agent. The two-time title challenger at Bellator is one of MMA’s most accomplished kickboxing-style fighters.
David Adesanya, the younger brother of Israel Adesanya, conducted an interview with Michael Page on his “FREESTYLEBENDER” YouTube channel. During the interview, the topic of signing with the UFC arose, and Page responded by stating, “I want to face top 5 or top 10 opponents. I don’t feel the need to prove myself.”
Page pointed to Michael Chandler‘s debut as the type of debut he envisions for himself. In his UFC debut in Abu Dhabi, Chandler went up against highly ranked contender Dan Hooker. Page is confident in his credentials and believes he deserves a significant fight for his debut.
Michael Page fights in the welterweight division, which was ruled by Kamaru Usman before he lost the belt to Leon Edwards. Edwards being British is a boon for Page, as the UFC could market an all-British Welterweight title fight if Page climbs up the ladder. Page also remarked about being called the British Anderson Silva, a moniker that drew praise from Silva himself. He also talks in depth about the only knockout loss he suffered.
With the welterweight division dominated by grapplers at the top, signing Page could provide a fresh stylistic matchup in the division. Page recently fought at Bellator 292 where he TKOed Goiti Yamauchi with leg kick. The viral TKO was praised by the MMA community. Page ruptured Yamaguchi’s patella tendon.
Michael Page vs Stephen Thompson would provide fireworks
Stephen Thompson is now a black sheep in the UFC due to him not fighting Michel Pereira, who missed weight at UFC 291. The UFC offered a quick turnaround for Thompson against Ian Garry at UFC 292; the Carolina native declined. Thompson could get back in Dana White’s good graces if Page signs with the promotion.
Stephen Thompson, one of the most accomplished strikers in the UFC, engaged in a fiery showdown with Kevin Holland in his most recent fight. Holland chose to stand and trade with Thompson, creating an exciting spectacle. Before his victory, the latter experienced a slump.
He suffered consecutive losses to Gilbert Burns and Belal Muhammed. Burns and Muhammed executed grappling-dominated strategies to overcome Thompson. When the fight takes place within striking distance, Thompson becomes nearly invincible.
Michael Page is also known for his kickboxing at Bellator. If a fight with Thompson happens, Page could have the opportunity to beat a Top 7 fighter and immediately contend for the title, as in the case of “Iron” Michael Chandler. Thompson and Page have been cordial, and the chances of that happening are very low. But money can change anything, and the fight can happen.
