New UFC signing Michael Venom Page believes Leon Edwards will remain the UFC welterweight champ for the time being. And his goal is to secure a title shot with his fellow Briton. Bellator’s all-time KO leader Page (21-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC) makes his octagon debut with Kevin Holland at UFC 299. The event happens on March 9th, at Kaseya Center in Miami. Very recently, the matchup pairing leak, from head honcho Dana White‘s plan-board got fans excited.
The two-time former Bellator title challenger recently jibed that Holland definitely won’t repeat the striking-only agreement for their UFC 299 battle. This is a jeer at Holland’s promise at UFC on ESPN 42 (Dec. 2022) to test out his strike-only mettle. However, Page knows he has a big take ahead of him, in Holland. But, he is still hopeful for a welterweight affair with Edwards. Here’s what he had to say to MMA Junkie’s Mike Bohn:
Hopefully Leon’s still got the belt. I definitely believe he can still have the belt. We can sell out a stadium. We can make so much noise and sell out a stadium in the U.K. and bring an untold story to the UFC...Michael Venom Page told Mike Bohn
22-3 Edwards recently made a successful title defense at UFC 296. As of late, the fighter divulged UFC 300 title defense talks with Dana White and Co. after getting the champion’s welcome home. Subsequently, the prospect of facing “Rocky” excites Page prematurely, as he debuts the star-stacked welterweight division.
Page, 36, is confident he’s not overstating the magnitude or importance of fighting Edwards, and he believes it’s achievable. Accordingly, he has invoked “Tom Aspinall doing his thing as well at heavyweight” as well. As such, the fighter emphatically upvotes British fighters reigning in multiple weight classes altogether.
Leon Edwards lets in on UFC 300 title defense talks
Leon Edwards is negotiating to return to Villa Park to defend the title this summer. This English southpaw trains at Renegade MMA gym, located in Birmingham, UK. Recently, during Aston Villa’s home win over Burnley, the Birmingham native received a hero’s welcome at halftime.
Thereafter, addressing the crowd, the 170lbs titleholder revealed that he was gunning for a title defense on home soil. And this has subsequently excited the promotion’s new signing- Michael Venom Page.
After becoming a free agent earlier this year, Page said he had “flirted” with the UFC in contract talks. The UFC management said the interest was mutual to sign “Venom” on. And ultimately both parties reached an agreement to bring the devastating striker to the UFC roster.
Currently, speaking with MMA Junkie before his welterweight debut, the fighter praised Edwards for carrying the division. As such, although he knows it’s quite early on, he urged that he would love to fight the 170lbs champion down the line.
