Robert Whittaker is one of the top middleweight contenders in the UFC. He recently talked about his showdown against Dricus Du Plessis who went on to now become the UFC middleweight champion. Whittaker talked about how he had underestimated Du Plessis during their fight at UFC 290. However, fans found some fault in his statements. Here is what happened:
Robert Whittaker made his appearance at the MMArcade Podcast. There he talked about UFC 297 and his fight with Dricus Du Plessis. He said that the main event made him realize that he did not prepare adequately for Du Plessis. He also said that he now realized how tough, strong, and hungry Du Plessis was as a fighter.
However, somebody compared this segment with his statement at the UFC 290 press conference ahead of his fight where he said:
I have trained like a madman for the last 4-8 weeks. Yeah man, may the best man win. You know he's gonna get the best version of myself coming weekend. You see I don't understand anybody who underestimates their opponents.Robert Whittaker
Robert Whittaker and Dricus du Plessis faced off last year in July in a UFC middleweight title eliminator fight at UFC 290. Du Plessis won the fight by TKO in the second round. He also won the Performance of the Night award and the number-one contender spot in the middleweight division.
Whittaker said after the fight that for some reason he was not thinking about the fight. He said that he did not feel like himself there in the octagon against him. Dricus Du Plessis went on to defeat Sean Strickland at UFC 297 to now become the UFC middleweight champion. Meanwhile, Robert Whittaker lies at #3 in the UFC rankings in the middleweight division.
