“Cormier getting passes for cheating”- MMA community furiously reacts to Daniel Cormier acknowledging “towel-gate” during Hall of Fame ceremony

For the first time, Daniel Cormier has acknowledged utilizing a “towel trick” to lose weight before defending his light-heavyweight championship in 2017. At UFC 210, the former two-weight world champion was scheduled to face Anthony Johnson again when his weight crept slightly over the 205-pound threshold. He had hours to drop the extra pound, but he chose to return right away, suddenly gaining weight after lightly grabbing the provided towel so he could weigh himself nude.  He argued that the scale had been adjusted at the time, and he eventually overcame Johnson to keep his title. But he has since admitted that in order to make weight for the fight, he actually cheated on the scale.

He expressed this during his induction into the UFC Hall of Fame last night in Las Vegas, he stated, “Guys, I want to tell you something because I feel like right now is the time to be completely transparent, I think I may have grabbed the towel in Buffalo. It was 1.2. I tried to give it up, guys. Trust me, I tried to give it up. I had a pound to lose. They even went and called my wife to try and get me back in the tub. I said no way, this s*** is over. She told me ‘Daniel, just take a hot bath.’ I go, it’s not that simple.”

When Cormier was standing on the scale at this precise moment, he used the cunning move of placing his hands on the towel to appear to lose just enough weight to make the 205-pound cutoff. He stated, “I walk back, [my coach] he goes ‘DC, do you remember the old wrestling trick?’ I said, can you stand behind me? Because there’s two — you can put your hands behind you and your person can lift you up. He said, ‘No, it’s the towel one.’” Turns out it worked out for him. He further expressed his sincere apologies to his former opponent for missing the weight against him, he stated, “‘Rumble,’ I’m sorry my guy,”
