Former UFC superstar Nate Diaz will make his professional boxing debut in August. He will take on “The Problem Child” Jake Paul in a blockbuster event in Texas. Both fighters, Ariel Helwani and DAZN Boxing, held a press conference to promote the fight. However, a journalist blatantly disrespected Nate Diaz and his brother Nick Diaz at the press conference.
The journalist said, “Nate, I am actually a boxer myself and I’ve been trying to get on this undercard. I’m just wondering if I can fight your brother, Nick? If he’s anything like you, I reckon I’ll beat his f****** a**.” Apparently, the journalist looked for clout, but it backfired enormously. He got blasted on Twitter by fans, fighters, and MMA journalists.
Luke Thomas wrote on Twitter, “When I think of what’s ailing combat sports media, it’s generally that it’s either too indie to have an impact or too corporate to really challenge power structures. But another problem is that goobers like this are prevalent.” Thomas is a veteran analyst and journalist who has covered the sport of MMA for more than a decade.
It was such a disrespectful moment that even Jake Paul apologized to Diaz. The journalist worked for Betr Media, associated with Betr Sports, a start-up involving Paul. Paul promised Diaz and other media members that he would fire the journalist. The boxing bout will happen in August, and so far, these moments have done a better job promoting the fight.
