UFC 280 has come to a close, with the card producing some mind-blowing fights, and equally divisive victories.

For instance, the fight that is the most contested right now is the Sean O’Malley vs Petr Yan bout. A lot of fans on the internet are of the opinion that Yan got the better of the American, albeit, by a slim margin. That being said, a fight that escaped most fans’ radars was the Muhammad Mokaev vs Malcolm Gordon bout.

Mokaev seemed to be in control for much of the fight before he finished his American opponent with a submission. Now, it seems like a sort of beef is brewing between the young Briton and someone who was not even on the card, Daniel Cormier.

The incident that sparked tensions took place during the UFC 280 weigh in show. Anchor Laura Sanko cheekily called out Daniel Cormier for not knowing who Muhammad Mokaev was, saying, “I’m going to tell on you… he said, ‘who is that’? (mimicking Cormier)”. Obviously, as an analyst and commentator, Cormier refuted this light-hearted claim.

It seems like Muhammad Mokaev did not enjoy this revelation by Laura Sanko. He wrote on Twitter, “I didn’t knew him too till he fight Jon Jones.

Here, Mokaev seems to be referencing Daniel Cormier’s famed and heated rivalry with the great Jon Jones, to whom he lost twice.

Like a lot of MMA fans, it feels like Mokaev has got tremendous respect for Jon Jones. The American became champion of the light heavyweight division at merely 23 – he is the youngest champion in UFC history. It doesn’t feel like there is going to be anyone on the light heavyweight roster right now who could beat that mark.

Mokaev, however, seems to be preparing to match Jon Jones’s record, albeit in the flyweight division. He outlined this desire in a new interview, saying, “To be the youngest UFC champion, that’s March 2024 — end of March. The 29th or the 30th of March, that’s how I worked it out.

He continued, “I have plans. I work out every day and count the days. I believe I will fight for the interim belt the end of next year.” [H/T MMAFighting]

Mokaev is just 22 at the moment – however, he can ascend the rankings at a steep pace if he keeps up the scintillating performances he is putting out there for the fans.
