Nate Diaz opens up about his UFC contract and how it stopped him from boxing. Diaz is one of the biggest legends of UFC and started his career with The Ultimate Fighter.
Throughout his long career, Nate Diaz fought against some amazing opponents and has given fight fans some memorable moments. Last year, Diaz finished his UFC contract and decided to retire from the promotion. According to the fighter he waited for that opportunity for a long time.
Recently, in an interview, Diaz mentioned how Dana White scouted him out to UFC. Diaz also revealed that every time he wanted to be out of the promotion, there was a financial incentive as a result he was never able to box.
He said: “Dana White came and saw me fight for the title. He saw me fight and he was like ‘Nah, we want this guy on the Ultimate Fighter.’ So, I never got out to do boxing and everytime it was time to go, they were like ‘holdup’ doubling up the financial situation. So, I finally got out of my contract and that’s like a breath of fresh air. Not that I didn’t want to fight MMA and UFC, I just didn’t want to be stuck in a contract like years ago.”
Now that Diaz is out of the UFC contract, he described it as a fresh start and now he’s free to do whatever he wants with his life. Diaz liked being in the UFC but didn’t want to be under a contract for life.
Tony Ferguson was fine with losing to Nate Diaz in the fighter’s last UFC fights
Diaz’s last fight was originally against Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 279 but due to some problems, Tony Ferguson had to step in at the last moment to fight Diaz. In the fight, both fighters went back and forth for four rounds and finally Diaz won the bout via submission.
It was a fairytale end for Diaz who was able to finish the UFC career with a win. Recently, talking about the fight, Ferguson mentioned that he didn’t care much about it and was ready to lose the fight so that Diaz can leave with peace.
He said at UFC 291 media day: “When we had Nate, Nate was hard to take f*****g serious. It was almost like, I didn’t wanna lose, but I’m gonna be real, like, here, take your f*****g victory, get the f**k outta here, and go make some f*****g money. Here, let me slap you on your ass and you can go over there, dude, because you obviously don’t wanna f*****g be here. I’ve helped out the UFC plenty of times.”
Ferguson mentioned that he’s a company man and has helped the promotion multiple times when they have asked for it.
