UFC legend Nate Diaz, renowned for his fearless fighting spirit, recently found himself grappling with a unique fear. The fighter dreads being devoured by a shark during an ocean race. Despite his impressive track record, Diaz has an undeniable aversion to swimming in wide-open waters. He believes that lurking sharks are always on the prowl, patiently waiting to make him their next meal.
38-year-old Diaz prepares for his highly anticipated professional boxing debut against YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in August. His exceptional cardiovascular endurance remains a well-known attribute. Alongside his brother Nick and a group of training partners, Nate regularly challenges himself in grueling triathlon and Ironman competitions.
With the boxing match drawing nearer, Diaz’s unwavering determination drives him to participate in two upcoming triathlons before the fight. Thankfully, one of these events will take place in the safety of a lake rather than the unpredictable ocean. This welcome change brings Diaz a sense of relief. He genuinely harbors concerns that a shark could strike at any moment in the ocean.
During a recent appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, Diaz candidly shared his anxieties. He revealed, “Every time we would be on the beach…my brother would be all pumped up…” “I’d be like ‘Motherf*****, I’m only doing this because of you, and now I’m going to get eaten by a shark,” he said. Fortunately, Nick has reduced his participation in recent events, which brings Nate some relief.
Nate Diaz: Athlete outside the UFC

Nate Diaz continues to remain cautious about venturing into the ocean for races, instead favoring the safety of lakes. Despite his fear of sharks, it has not deterred him from pursuing his passion for competing in triathlons and races.
Reflecting on his previous endeavors, Diaz opened up, stating, “I’ve done about six half Ironmans. I did the Big Kahuna half Ironman in Santa Cruz, out there you swim around the pair.” “… you see and hear a load of s***. I hate ocean swims but all the other racers love it,” he said. “This race next weekend is going to be in a lake so that’s good, those are my favorite races.”
Beyond his athletic pursuits, Diaz is widely known for being fond of marijuana. He jokingly suggested that his performance in races would improve if he could take the drug during such events. Concerns arose regarding the potential relocation of Diaz’s fight against Paul due to Texas’ stringent marijuana laws. However, Jake Paul‘s manager promptly reassured everyone that no change of venue would be necessary.
