Paulo Costa is a bonafide internet troll – when not rolling his way through opponents like he usually does, Costa can be observed to make light of situations on Twitter every so often.

However, what Paulo Costa has recently come out and asserted might not have any laughing tracks attached to it. The UFC had announced the officialization of his bout with Robert Whittaker, set for Perth, at UFC 284. However, Costa rallied against this from the get-go, and now, he has assertively denied any fight with Whittaker.

Speaking to Ariel Helwani, he said, “That was very fake news, because I didn’t get a contract or terms of nothing to fight [Robert Whittaker]. Mick Maynard asked me if I would like to fight him and I said, ‘Of course I can fight him, but now let’s just get to terms.’ “

He continued, “They didn’t send a contract or terms or nothing. They just said, ‘If you want to fight Whittaker, let’s do that fight.’ But I cannot do that fight, fight the No.1 and No.2, high level guy like [Robert] Whittaker for the same money I’m getting since 2017. Doesn’t make sense.

Despite what might seem like Paulo Costa’s refusal to fight in the promotion, Costa has gone ahead and claimed that he will be ready to fight in the UFC, but on his terms; his price – $500,000.

Whether or not Costa gets the deal he is hoping for is yet to be seen, as what he is asking for might be slightly unwarranted, given that Francis Ngannou earns the same basic pay. This should come as a qualifier – Paulo Costa has never been a champion.

That being said, maybe Paulo Costa is one pay increase away from actually being able to perform at his fight, where he can deliver the hits that made the fans like him. His fights against Yoel Romero and the recent one against Luke Rockhold come to mind. Whatever the case, fans will find out soon about Costa’s future in the company.
