Paulo Costa has only fought twice since his title fight loss in 2020. Since then, he has had weight issues when he fought Marvin Vettori, and the UFC told him to fight in the light heavyweight division due to the issues. However, Paulo Costa successfully made weight against his fight with Luke Rockhold at UFC 278. Before UFC 289, he went on Twitter to make controversy about weight cutting with a homophobic reference.

Paulo Costa wrote, “Cut weights only for fag people.” Though it is unclear what Costa meant by the tweet, it has come off as offensive. The word “fag” has a derogatory connotation to homosexuality. Costa has used his Twitter account to troll fighters and personalities alike. Last week, he went after BJJ fighter Gabi Garcia and her domestic violence accusation against her husband.

He has used his account to go after homosexuals or people who cut weight. There is a possibility that Costa meant something entirely different. Nevertheless, the Brazilian fighter knows how to entertain his followers on social media. Costa will fight on the Salt Lake City PPV card in July. He will fight Ikram Aliskerov at UFC 291.

Ikram Aliskerov is a Russian fighter with a good striking background. Costa will have to utilize his BJJ skills to overcome the Russian fighter. Dana White and the UFC wanted to book a fight between Khamzat Chimaev and Costa for the Abu Dhabi card. However, the UFC decided to go a different route for some reason.

UFC fighters have used saunas to help their weight-cutting process. Recently, Paulo Costa made a controversial statement about weight cutting. He used a homophobic reference to describe weight cuts. However, fans caught the Brazilian fighter in a sauna leading to speculation.

Costa went on Twitter to reveal his intention to use a sauna. He wrote, “If u think I’m cutting weight ur wrong. I’m not .Sauna is a beauty session for skin and hair healthy.” If Costa is not cutting weight, he will soon have to start the process for his upcoming bout against Aliskerov.

UFC 291 is scheduled for the end of July. It appears likely that Costa has begun training camp. He must beat Aliskerov at UFC 291 to remain in title contention. Costa has indicated his desire to compete once again for the title. However, he must have a winning streak starting with Aliskerov at UFC 291.
