Paulo Costa reveals a surprising past job as an IT Consultant that he held for over 1 year
Costa revealed a job he held prior to his MMA career
Paulo Costa’s lore just keeps expanding with every appearance he makes on the headlines. From his mysterious arrest for allegedly assaulting a nurse over vaccine certificates to his entrepreneurial venture to spread his “Secret Juice”, Costa has taken marketing himself and made it a hobby.
Now the latest addition to this lore is that prior to turning to a full-time MMA fighter, Costa held a day job in the most unexpected field for a man like him. On Ariel Helwani’s MMA Hour, Costa revealed today that he in fact held a job in IT prior to training full time.
Back in Brazil, Costa worked as a tech consultant, a long cry from his image as a dumb jock. Costa apparently acted as a teacher to familiarize people with Microsoft Office and he held that job for over a year.
When asked about his previous job by Helwani, Costa said, “I used to work in teach, how you say? IT” to which Helwani credited Costa with being a smart guy. Costa denied saying, “Not too much, I don’t really think I’m very smart but every stupid f*** can do this” as he let out a laugh. Elaborating further on his responsibilities on the job Costa said, “I teach people how to create some files and write something on word and how to edit that and format that.”

Paulo Costa, Stipe Miocic and other UFC Fighters who have second jobs
Costa then said he had to quit the job as he wanted to dedicate a higher portion of his time to training MMA. Costa quit the job a few months before he was scheduled to be featured on TUF Brazil:3
Costa is not alone in being an MMA fighter with a day job, in fact, a surprising number of MMA athletes who make it to the big leagues i.e. the UFC have to hold on to a second job to make ends meet.
The most notable example is Al Iaquinta, who also held a job as a real estate agent for the majority of his MMA career and he still does, long removed from his days of being a perennial contender.
Other noteworthy examples include Paul Craig who works as teacher in his home of Scotland, Geoff Neal who until 2020 held a job as a waiter in a Dallas restaurant, or Joaquin Buckley, who still held his post as a registered nurse during his epic KO victory over Impa Kasagnay, and even former Heavyweight Champion, Stipe Miocic who still regularly works at his original job as a fireman.
