On Friday, UFC legend Conor McGregor tweeted about his efforts in fighting homelessness in Ireland. The project is just starting out. The fighter claims to have built a 21-home housing development and moved families in just before Christmas. The former two-division champion recently doused fighting words, slamming the current Irish administration. “The Notorious” thus notoriously made stern comparisons with ‘older’ Irish Presidential competition, for a legitimate chance to run for office.

The fighter returns to action in June to face Michael Chandler. Before that, the Irishman has been ardently polishing up his self-image. Whilst also aiming for social betterment. McGregor, 35, says his company is working on 1,000 homes across Ireland, all for social housing. He has been talking about it for some time now and is finally acting on such a discourse. Taking to X, he wrote:

Update on my end. I am now at close to 1000 homes in construction, readying for construction, or already completed construction across Ireland at the moment...All of which are for social housing, despite some reports (not surprised). I recently completed a 21-home housing estate that got families in and housed just before the Christmas!

McGregor’s tweet was in response to an article on Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTE) which explained that homelessness in Ireland has increased by over 50%. This was since the new government came to power and launched its ‘Homes for All’ scheme. Previously, McGregor and his company’s plans for a 113-unit apartment block in Drimnagh, Dublin for The Large Scale Residential Development (LRD) application had caught much flak.

Now though, he has a stronger foothold. The leader of the Labor Party, Ivana Bacik, has described the latest homelessness figures as “unacceptable”. As of November 2023, more than 13,000 people are homeless in Ireland, which she terms a “national scandal“.

Fans react to UFC fighter Conor McGregor’s housing re-efforts

Conor McGregor is famed as a notable MMA fighter, a business entrepreneur, and a sports promoter. Even more so, he is an avid instigator of the Irish cause. The Dubliner proactively pushes for all things Irish. McGregor had also recently had a flirtation with the idea of a run for the presidency. This came following the socio-political unrest in Dublin. He accused Ireland’s main governing parties of engaging in infighting instead of seeking real change. McGregor tweeted in response to a video of Ireland’s Garda chief Drew Harris, who condemned the violence as “disgraceful” and driven by a “hooligan faction driven by far-right ideology.”
