Ian Machado Garry vs. Geoff Neal took place on Saturday’s UFC 298 card. Competing at Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. (pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+), Garry’s split decision win over the opponent was subject to heavy California crowd chants, demeaning the welterweight. Concurrently, now Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson has pitched in on the criticism of the rising 170lber. Judges, Felicia Oh and Sal D’Amato scored the bout 30-27, with Derek Cleary leaning 29-28. But in a fresh change of pace, without crying foul or “robbery”, fight fans straight reverted to name-calling Garry.
From Robert Whittaker‘s high-paced striking middleweight co-mains brawl with Paulo Costa to Ilia Topuria‘s sensational knockout title win at UFC 298; the card saw many such spectacles. However, Quinton Jackson echoes fan sentiments, in dubbing down Garry. Speaking with Merab Dvalishvili, TJ Dillashaw, and co-host Bear Degidio at the ‘JAXXON‘ Podcast’ he said –
I don't think Ian Garry should have won that fight...because he was running like a b**ch...[on scoring the aggressor] he just kept running around, moving around...Geoff Neal, he should have just went into the middle of the cage and be like 'hey, what's up'.Rampage Jackson via JAXXON Podcast
Neal opened up the bout with big leg kicks. The welterweight mainstay dominated the periphery of the Octagon, with ranged kicks, while Ian Garry did not connect substantial hits. However, Garry did bounce back in the other rounds with good combos and kicks to the body and chin. The segment also sees Jackson reconfirming Geoff Neal’s name diligently, despite Neal having appeared on the podcast before.
This in particular, and the generic disdain comes in light of him reconfirming the “Ian the cu*k” moniker, with The MMA Hour‘s Ariel Helwani. As a result, Garry went off on an unfiltered rant against the UFC legend in his IG stories and refused to appear in the podcast. Despite the oddity, this enmity is brewing quite vibrant.
Quinton Jackson vs. Ian Machado Garry: The Story So Far
Ian Garry had a lot riding on him at UFC 298. The welterweight standouts’ bout against Geoff Neal was meant to bounce him back in good favors of the fight bubble. Notwithstanding that though, he defeated Neal via split decision (30-27, 28-29, 30-27).
In recent times, he caught much flack for self-promotional tendencies and interpersonal squabble with peers. His continued association with his 40-year-old wife’s previous partner didn’t help matters any. His wife, Layla Anna Lee‘s 2010 publication: How to be a WAG. was dubbed as a guide to celebrity ensnaring.
As a result, his correlation with his wife’s ex-partner earned the title of “Ian the cu*k.” Unknown to Quinton Jackson, the veteran had asked Ariel Helwani if such claims held merit.
Garry caught wind of the matter and snapped back vigorously.
After the welterweight ripped the veteran for his choice of wording, Jackson later posted a video, apologizing for honestly not knowing anything on the matter.
However, as it would seem, the podcaster and UFC veteran is not done yet with this squabble. Garry advanced to an undefeated streak of 14-0 MMA, 7-0 UFC with his win at UFC 298. However, Jackson reverted to his usual slurry demeanor, saying the Irishman did not deserve his win, as he never stood his ground.
Garry models himself to be the ‘disruptor’ of the promotion, taking to the likes of fellow Dubliner, Conor McGregor. Hence, he isn’t one to back away from tackling slurs and insults. Only time will tell how far this odd enmity stretches.
