“I’ve fought wrestlers before” – Robert Whittaker breaks down how he would tackle Khamzat Chimaev in a fight

Robert Whittaker- Khamzat Chimaev

Khamzat Chimaev is arguably the biggest threat currently in both, the welterweight and the middleweight divisions. Robert Whittaker, who has fought in both the weight classes is asked about how he would solve the puzzle that is Khamzat in a potential fight.

Robert Whittaker is the former champion of the middleweight division and has wins over some of the best fighters to ever grace the octagon. He is an elite fighter himself but someone like Khamzat Chimaev is a puzzle for Robert. Khamzat has taken over the UFC by storm since 2020. The fighter has only five fights in the promotion and 11 fights in his professional career but is already considered to be the next champion in the UFC by many.

“It would be tricky. I’d be firing those kicks down the middle like you would not believe,” said Robert answering the fan in the Singapore meet. “I don’t my right foot would touch the mat. He’s a tough guy. I’ve fought wrestlers before, though. I’ve fought Yoel Romero who is a silver medalist. Granted that he’s not that type of grappling guy, but that’s something I haven’t really thought about and will have to try and digest when we get there.”

Khamzat is currently coming off a win against welterweight title contender Gilbert Burns at UFC 273 which totally elevated Khamzat in the eyes of his peers and fans. Khamzat now sits at #3 in the welterweight division and is looking to fight another top contender and get his hands on the welterweight belt.

Though Khamzat has fought in the middleweight division in the UFC before, there are no signs of “Borz” going up to the 185-pound division anytime soon. Khamzat has admitted that his dream is to hold belts in multiple divisions so it wouldn’t be a surprise if we see Chimaev having to go through Robert to fulfill his dream of capturing the middleweight belt.
