“Winning is ALL that matters,” Robert Whittaker defends Israel Adesanya on being criticized for allegedly boring fights
Israel Adesanya and Robert Whittaker at UFC 271
Robert Whittaker is one of the most exciting fighters on the current roster but doesn’t mind himself being called boring if the future holds that fate for him. Whittaker, the former UFC middleweight champion just came off a huge win over former title challenger Marvin Vettori in what was UFC’s first-ever event held in France. Whittaker just dominated Vettori in each of the 15 minutes of the fight. Whittaker is the first ever Australian champion in UFC history and going back a little further, he is also the first Australian winner of The Ultimate Fighter.
Besides Vettori, Whittaker is also known for his wins over the likes of Derek Brunson, Ronaldo Souza, Kelvin Gastelum, Darren Till, Jared Cannonier, Yoel Romero, Uriah Hall and many more. Whittaker’s only proven opponent superior to him has been none other than the succeeding and the current UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya. Adesanya is now going for his sixth title defence against kickboxing rival Alex Pereira at UFC 281. If Pereira wins, there’s a chance Whittaker might go to challenge for a title yet again in his career.
Robert Whittaker accepts that he would ‘hug his opponent for 25 minutes’ if it gets him the win
In the post-fight interview at UFC Paris, Whittaker talks about the future as a fighter, his predictions for UFC 281, his fight with Vettori, his move to light-heavyweight in future and much more. Whittaker also talked about his rival Adesanya being criticized heavily for delivering lacklustre performances in his victories recently. To a little surprise, Whittaker came out supporting “The Last Stylebender.”
“I’m pretty sure, he’s just paid to win,” says Whittaker. “That’s the most important thing whether boring or not. You can have the most exciting fight of the night, [but] if you lose [that fight] no one’s talking about you tomorrow. As cold as it sounds, winning is all that matters. If I could just take someone down and hold him down until someone took him home, I would. Love my fans, but I will. happily hug someone on the ground for 25 minutes if that gets me the W. Yeah, that’s the sport we’re in.” [h/t Real Press MMA]
After Israel Adesanya’s last fight at UFC 276, a clip started getting viral as people in the live audience were seen leaving the arena during the last round of the fight. However, with insane punching power in Pereira’s hand, this upcoming fight might not go to distance as Adesanya in the past has also shown to shine the most when under pressure. Who do you think wins the fight at UFC 281 between Adesanya and Pereira? What do you make of Robert Whittaker’s defence of the current champion?
