Nate Diaz has made his place in the majority of MMA fans all around the world last weekend as he concluded a 15-year-old MMA career with a solid statement by submitting former interim-UFC lightweight champion Tony Ferguson in the main event of UFC 279 via submission. The finish came in the fourth round with 2:09 minutes left for the round to end, poetic justice to Diaz because it the number also symbolises Diaz’s postal code of his hometown in Stockton, California, which is 209.

Diaz came into the UFC by being known as the younger brother of MMA legend Nick Diaz. He immediately had his own shine outside of his brother’s shadow the moment he won the fifth season of The Ultimate Fighter series in 2007. Later on in 2012, Diaz fought for the UFC lightweight title against then-champion Benson Henderson. Though he never became a champion himself, Diaz had won over 3 former UFC champions in Anthony Pettis, Conor McGregor and now Ferguson.

In an interview with James Lynch under the banner of MMA news outlet Middle Easy, former UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker talks about his win against Marvin Vettori at UFC Paris, Diaz’s original UFC 279 opponent Khamzat Chimaev’s weigh-in debacle and much more. In the midst of all, Whittaker also reacted to Diaz’s amazing finish over Tony Ferguson at UFC 279 main event.

“That was just classic Nate,” says Whittaker whilst laughing a little. “Chilling in the fight, taking time off, you know. He makes a mockery of it sometimes, but that’s just classic Nate Diaz. I was very happy for him getting the win. I’m a big Ferguson fan, but to wrap up his career the way he has and yeah, I’m very happy for Nate,” concluded Whittaker.
