Robert Whittaker was not happy with the MMA community when he lost to Dricus Du Plessis. The former middleweight champion talked about how he was brutally criticized last year on social media when he lost the fight. Here is what happened:

Robert Whittaker recently talked about the unforgiving nature of MMA fans. He did an interview on the MMA Hour where he recalled the criticism he got following his loss to Du Plessis at UFC 290.

The MMA community don't make it easy. Those guys are harder than any fight. The criticism and comments are worse than any punch, or any kick… I love the MMA community… But they can turn on you at the drop of a dime. You know how many times after I lost to DDP, just reading the comments, ‘Robert Whittaker’s a wash’, ‘Whittaker is done now… Let’s be fair, I’m smashing most guys.

Whittaker opened up about the unpredictability of the support from MMA fans. He emphasized how quickly they can turn against a fighter, based on whether he lost or won. Whittaker fought Du Plessis at UFC 290 in Las Vegas. He lost by technical knockout in the second round of the fight. Whittaker views this loss as a necessary wake-up call.

It prompted him to reassess and improve his approach to fighting and carry it forward in future fights. His next fight came last month against Paulo Costa. Whittaker defeated Costa by unanimous decision at UFC 298. The fight went on for three grueling rounds. Both fighters were on the offensive from the get-go, however, Whittaker came out victorious on the judges’ card.

Whittaker is now back on the top contender list of the UFC middleweight division. The Kiwi now ranks at #3 while Du Plessis reigns the division as the new champion.

Robert Whittaker wants a title eliminator fight next

Whittaker recently discussed feeling “sick as a dog” before his fight with Costa at UFC 298. ‘The Reaper’ told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour that he woke up with a sore throat before the fight. He eventually outlasted Costa in their three-round bout, winning by unanimous decision.

‘The Reaper’ is a former UFC champion. He lost the UFC middleweight title to Israel Adesanya in 2019 and lost again in a rematch in 2022. Whittaker’s first loss was by TKO at UFC 243. He then won three fights in a row before fighting Adesanya again at UFC 271. There Whittaker lost again by unanimous decision. He has now said that he wants to get the belt back.
