Robert Whittaker on Israel Adesanya vs Alex Pereira

Robert Whittaker, the #1 ranked middleweight is no stranger to the skills of champion Israel Adesanya. He has been in two wars with Izzy, losing both. He is very aware of the threat he poses inside the cage.

Whittaker spoke about the Last Stylebender’s upcoming fight against bitter rival Alex Pereira on Fox Sports Australia. He revealed that he has keenly observed this fight’s history and the buildup. He said there were a couple of things that would determine the fight.

Namely, the smaller gloves might affect how apprehensive each fighter might be with their striking. Another thing Whittaker said would greatly affect the fight was how much each fighter had evolved since their time in Glory. In the same interview, he was asked whether he was rooting for either fighter.

“Yeah, absolutely not”, Whittaker said. “I hope they both hurt each other extremely. I hope they fight so hard, they hurt each other so bad that they never come back the same”, said the Australian. He went on to reveal the reason for this, saying, “I do believe I’m the best middleweight in the world. I just get countered by Izzy so hard.”

The buildup to this fight has been a rollercoaster. Alex Pereira chose to go hard on the trolling, whereas Israel Adesanya looked very intense as he trained for the fight. With tensions flaring between the two during the press conference, fans are in for a barnstormer of a main event at UFC 281.

And with him publicly announcing his intention of switching to boxing, it looks like UFC 284 might be the last time fans to watch Costa inside a UFC octagon. This is also a good chance for Robert to string together some wins as he looks to regain his championship.
