UFC 280 contains a few of the highest anticipated match-ups of the year, including Petr Yan vs Sean O’Malley.

Nobody expected Petr Yan to lose to Aljamain Sterling earlier this year. Coming off a disqualification loss to Sterling a year prior, most fans expected Yan to do to him what he had done before – ragdoll him. However, that was not to be, as Aljamain Sterling decisively wrestled him to a victory.

Now, Petr Yan finds himself in a tough spot. With no one else to face at the moment but #10 bantamweight Sean O’Malley, he has a lot to lose going into the fight. Sean O’Malley, on the other hand, is facing elite opposition for the first time (excluding Marlon Vera).

However, going into fight week, O’Malley remains defiant in claiming to win with ease. He said, “I feel better than I’ve ever felt. Cardio feels great. Mind is sharp. I will beat Pete… can’t believe I’m such a big underdog, to be honest, it blows my mind.

He continued, “TJ (Dillashaw) vs Aljo (Sterling) is kind of going under the radar… because I’m a bigger draw.” As an ending statement, he said, I beat his (Yan) ass.

Despite him not fighting the pinnacle of opposition among the 135 pounders, Sean O’ Malley is a name that needs no introduction. Instead of feeding him to the experienced talents of the division, the UFC decided to not rush things with him. Instead, the company wanted to let the young American develop and then mount a challenge at the right time.

Petr Yan is a tested entity. He has previously held the belt, and looked set to defend it against Aljamain Sterling in their first fight. However, things wouldn’t pan out that way for him. In taking on “Suga”, Yan faces a big threat. If he does lose to the brazen fighter, his ranking in the bantamweight division will drop steeply.

The UFC has most likely booked this fight as a title eliminator. If either wins, they will take on the winner of the co-main event. Given the nature of Petr Yan’s opposition, he sits at -305 as a heavy betting favourite.

With a lot on the line, expect the match-up between Petr Yan and Sean O’Malley to be an extremely exciting affair.
