After his recent glory, the new bantamweight champion “Suga” Sean O’Malley is on top of the world. His UFC 292 win against former champion Aljamain Sterling was one of the biggest upsets in 2023. Many favored Sterling to retain his title, but O’Malley had some different plans for the main event. However, even after the knockout finish, the rivalry has not dialed down even a tiny bit.
In a recent comment, Sterling criticized UFC’s matchmaking for the bantamweight title, to which O’Malley has a spicy reply. “The Funkmaster” questioned UFC’s intention in trying to make a fight happen between Marlon “Chito” Vera and O’Malley. Sterling said about this matchup, “Why are we making this a WWE sport?” However, O’Malley didn’t take those comments well and replied, “Did that right hand not feel real brother?”
Both fighters, Sean O’Malley and Aljamain Sterling, hold different opinions on the bantamweight matchups. In multiple interviews, Sterling has expressed his desire for a rematch but has also said that UFC won’t give him one. In his post-match interview, O’Malley called out Chito Vera for his rematch to set up his first title defense.
The bantamweight division is currently stacked with multiple rising contenders. Top contenders like Henry Cejudo, Cory Sandhagen, and Merab Dvalishvili also have their eyes set on the gold. Despite being the no.4 ranked contender, Vera will likely be O’Malley’s first title defense. Aljamain Sterling will have to wait for some time to challenge Sean O’Malley.
Sean O’Malley talks about his loss against Chito Vera
The new bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley’s first title defense looks more likely against his only loss in his career, Marlon “Chito” Vera. The duo fought back in 2020 at UFC 252. Vera emerged with a TKO victory against O’Malley in the first round of the fight.
In an interview with The MMA Hour, O’Malley jokingly revealed that he lost the Chito fight on purpose. “Suga” believed that his loss against Vera started a chain reaction that led to the UFC 292 win. O’Malley’s intentions behind Vera’s callout was to make a big fight happen in the division. Their history from UFC 252 and their career similarities make it an interesting matchup.
Ever since UFC 292, O’Malley and Vera have shared some bad blood. This intense rivalry makes this matchup intriguing. However, the UFC has yet to make any confirmation regarding the fight. With the release of UFC 295 and 296 cards, the matchup is most likely to occur in 2024.
