Sean O’Malley vs. Marlon Vera headline the main event of UFC 299 in March. This was a long-anticipated rematch. With the bantamweight title on the line, the stakes only went sky-high. Ever since O’Malley lost his first fight to Vera, he was keen on booking the rematch. As such, the two fighters went back and forth on social media. Now, Vera boldly predicted his fight against ‘Suga’ which received a heated response from the champion.

Marlon Vera and Sean O’Malley exchanged words and shared heated face-offs at the UFC Seasonal press conference. Now, Vera took to X to state he would make ‘Suga’ quit. This was a bold prediction. However, it was also an attempt to kindle a reaction from the champion. As such, he succeeded in doing so. But, firstly, here is what Vera said:

Sean O’Malley retorted with a fiery response. In his reply tweet, he completely dismissed Marlon Vera’s idea of making him quit and retaliated with a statement of his own.

Sean O’Malley won the bantamweight title by beating Aljamain Sterling at UFC 292. It was a huge upset win as Sterling was the favorite to win the fight. However, ‘Suga’ stunned everyone with his knockout and called out Marlon Vera for his first title defense. As such, Vera too won his fight at UFC 292, setting up the premise for their rematch. So, the UFC jumped on the narrative and booked them to headline UFC 299 in Miami.

Sean O’Malley and Marlon Vera went against each other at UFC 252 in 2020. O’Malley carried his persona and looked confident in the fight. However, ‘Chito’ came out as the victor after stopping ‘Suga’ in the first round via TKO.

But, it was apparent that O’Malley injured his leg in the fight, and that led to Vera’s win being controversial. Now, O’Malley shared his thoughts on the fight and stated what exactly happened.

Sean O’Malley, shortly after his rematch with Marlon Vera was announced, went live on the MMA Hour Show. As such, he looked back on his first meeting with ‘Chito’. He said a leg kick from Vera damaged a nerve in his calf. As such, he slipped to the ground and Vera finished with ground strikes. Now, ‘Suga’ questioned the probability of it and termed Vera’s win to be lucky. Also, he claimed Vera knows it too.

I guess it happens every once a while — that nerve, right? But how many times? Like, it doesn’t happen that much...But I feel like it was so lucky, and he knows it. He truly, deep down knows it. That was so lucky.

Marlon Vera got the title shot ahead of other title challengers just because of his history with Sean O’Malley. Also, the champion made it his priority to avenge his only loss in MMA. As such, they would meet inside the octagon at UFC 299. O’Malley and Vera would be coming off wins over Aljamain Sterling and Pedro Munhoz, respectively.
